Following a General Meeting of the national GPA held on 24 February , the membership voted by more than two-thirds majority in accordance with article 13 of the constitution to close the national GPA from 1 April The GPA continues to operate in Scotland. The book is an oral history which documents for the first time the experiences of many gay and lesbian police officers in their own words. Traditionally, Police Officers have not been permitted to wear uniform on marches or demonstrations that might be controversial or in any way 'political', but most Chief Constables agreed that Pride was a legitimate celebration of LGBT life and culture and by participating in uniform, could demonstrate the diversity within modern day Police Forces. As times have changed, police forces have adapted by adding LGBTQ divisions, officers and committees within their ranks to account for legislation established by governments to protect individuals who previously had little or no voice when it came to laws impacting their own communities. Diversity in service and the elimination of discrimination across the planet is led by many individuals, staff, associations and others within the global police community. Inclusivity, evolution, acceptance, intersectionality , organizational values and career advancement lead to proud cops and growing acceptance. They too struggled to gain a place and workplace free from discrimination and bias.

Part of our remit was to provide support and legal referrals for members of the LGBT community who had come into contact with the police. Though based in London, we received calls from all over the country. Most were from men who'd been charged with one of a number of sexual offences. Others were from men and women who'd been the victim of what we would now call homophobic hate crime and who were reluctant to go to the police, for fear that they wouldn't receive fair treatment. Galop was also involved in police liaison.
Police brutality and discrimination in the LGBT community has been a historical issue that has not been discussed enough. This has historically been seen at the Stonewall Riots and continued though the s when the Chicago Police returned a gay teenager to Jeffrey Dahmer, who murdered the boy. Until recently, a beach — right across from a popular Long Beach LGBT club called Ripples — was a place where LGBT members or those suspected of being gay were called names, harassed, and wrongfully arrested by Long Beach police officers.
